Anything which is in excess can be dangerous. Although carbohydrate is essential for producing energy, its excess intake can cause life taking diseases. Similarly, calcium is very important for the growth of bones. Our entire skeleton is made up of calcium. It improves the health of our teeth, nails and hair, apart from strengthening bones and preventing osteoporosis. But when this calcium grows in excess amount, it becomes dangerous for the body.
When can Calcium Become Problematic?
Since calcium is 99% concentrated in our teeth and bones, it usually does not create problems. When calcium does not get properly accumulated on our bones, teeth and nails then the problem starts. This is mostly due to osteoporosis or diseases in the same genre. Calcium needs to be absorbed by the specific areas. But if these areas do not absorb them, they start accumulating on other parts of the body and thus trigger off health problems.
What are the problems caused by excess calcium?
When the calcium is not absorbed properly by the bones or the teeth, they start accumulating on various areas like internal tissues, skin and nails. Some of the common problems associated with excess of calcium are depression, premature aging and fatigue. Cloudy eyes are yet another very prominent symptom of excess of calcium presence in the body. But this can be misleading as these symptoms are sometimes associated with other diseases and hence you should first confirm this with your doctor when such conditions start appearing.
How Much calcium is excess for the body?
You should daily take calcium in some form or the other. The most enriched calcium giving foods include dairy products, eggs etc. But even then your daily intake should never go beyond 2500 milligrams. This calcium is the total of the entire intake taken through food as well as via supplements.
How to choose a calcium supplement?
Everyone should take calcium daily in some form of the other. But before buying any special calcium supplement you should make sure about the levels of calcium and also the type of calcium should be easily absorbed by the body. Usually a calcium supplement contains approximately 40% of the required daily dosage of calcium. But if you are suffering from excess of calcium you should limit the use of calcium supplement till the time the calcium amount is controlled in your body. Since the non- absorption of calcium causes the excess of calcium problem, it is better to come back to the normal calcium intake once the necessary parts of the body start absorbing calcium.
So as to control the calcium levels in your body, you need to consult your doctor once in every 6 months. He may ask you to go through a serum calcium test to confirm the calcium levels. Some of the immediate precautions you can start if the calcium is in excess are reducing the consumption of calcium rich food and drinks. Fishes like tuna or Solomon too should be avoided.
