Folate deficiency is the medical condition where folic acid in the body is lower than the normal amount of folic acid that needs to be present in the body. Folic acid is a type of vitamin B, present in your blood.

Causes

The main function of the folic acid is to break down the vitamin C and B12 in the body and create new proteins in the body. The main cause of loss of folic acid in the body is the consumption of certain medicines, such as Dilantin. Certain diseases cut down the absorption of the folic acid in the body, such as sprue, or even alcoholism. Eating overcooked food also burns the folic acid present in the food. People who don’t eat fresh fruits or vegetables, or poor diet may also lack this constituent from the body. Hemolytic anemia also leads to loss of the folic acid from the body. During the third trimester of pregnancy excess folic acid is needed.

  • The patient may suffer from diarrhea.
  • He/she may also develop grey hairs.
  • The patient may develop peptic ulcer.
  • There may be poor growth rate.

A balanced diet is extremely necessary for proper amount of folic acid in the body. Try to eat beans, legumes, citrus fruits, juices, wheat bran, whole grains, etc. the dark green coloured leafy vegetables, poultry, pork, shellfish and liver may lead to eating of the folate deficiency
