Goiter is enlargement of thyroid gland.

Goiter occurs when thyroid gland is not able to produce enough hormones to meet body’s need. There are 2 type of simple goiter:

1)      Endemic

2)      Sporadic

Endemic or colloid goiter is more common in people with poor iodine .people who do not get enough iodine through diet.

Cause of sporadic goiter is unknown, but it is believed certain drugs like lithium can cause it.

Risk factors include:

• People above age of 40 yr
• Family history
• Female are more prone than males

Use of iodine salt in diet prevent endemic goiter
