Iron deficiency anemia is a commonly known blood disorder. It is caused by deficiency of iron in the body of the patient. The iron acts as a main component for the formation of hemoglobin and this hemoglobin acts as a store house of the iron in the body. Though, you may find some amount of iron in ferritin and hemosiderin in the bone marrow, liver and spleen.

Increased requirements of iron in the body due to certain major changes like pregnancy, lactation, growth of the children and adolescents may also lead to this disease. Certain kinds of gastrointestinal tract abnormalities may lead to malabsorption of iron in the body and ultimately lead to iron deficiency anemia. Massive blood loss due to trauma or surgery may also lead to this disease. Blood loss due to menstrual bleeding may also lead to anemia.

- The patient’s skin may become pale in nature.
- The patient may become irritable soon.
- He may often complain of tiredness and fatigue.
- There may be tachycardia.
- He may also experience sore or swollen tongue.

- The patient may feel the urge to consume peculiar substances, like dirt and ice, a medical condition called pica.
