Overview

Phenylketonuria is a disorder, which increases level of phenylalanine in the blood. The phenylalanine, a substance, is referred as building blocks of amino acids (proteins). The substance is present in almost all food items. It is necessary to take treatment of the condition at the right time otherwise a person can get affected from mental retardation. PKU is alternative name of the condition. And classic PKU is considered as the most severe form of the disorder. Non PKU and variant PKU are considered as less severe forms of the Phenylketonuria.
